Hear from the Hauber Family
What first led you to join the Eleuthera Pod — and why did you feel it might be a good fit for your family?
We first learned of Aeon from friends whose children had been enrolled for a few years. They spoke highly of the curriculum, the model and the faculty. Living on a small island in the Bahamas where quality schooling options are quite limited, made investigating Aeon a must.
How has being part of the Pod impacted your child academically and socially? (e.g., growth, motivation, friendships, confidence)
It's been quite affirming to see how our children have grown academically since first enrolling in Aeon. The curriculum is relevant and engaging and encourages critical and creative thinking. Family conversations around local and global events are always interesting as they are accustomed to explaining their points of view and healthy debating. Having classmates and teachers around the world exposes them to a great diversity in lifestyles and world views. They have formed meaningful friendships and they socialise outside of synchronised class times even though classes are virtual.
Can you describe a particular moment or memory that stands out — when you realized the Pod was really working for your family/children?
One of my learners has been diagnosed with mild dyscalculia. In their previous school, math has always been a struggle and they have verbally articulated their dislike of math. I was elated to hear them actually say 'I like math' after a year with Dr. Jeune, the math teacher. The extra mentoring and group sessions with their peers inside and the pod and abroad really changed their attitude towards math. The frustration level has come down significantly.
What aspects of the Pod experience (structure, community, support, flexibility, etc.) do you value most?
The flexibility has been a great plus over the last year. Having to travel for family emergencies and being able to take a family vacation at unusual times were possible and their teachers were very accommodating.
If another family were considering starting a Pod with us, what would you tell them — what should they know before taking the leap?
I highly recommend it! Not only do the learners benefit from a rich curriculum, but the flexibility allows them to engage in other activities they enjoy that are not limited to out-of-school hours - all contributing to a well-rounded learner. The high teacher:student ratio has fostered great guidance, support and fond relationships that I have no doubt will persist beyond graduation.
